Sophie of Württemberg
Sophie was the daughter of the King of Württemberg in Germany. Her mother was sister to Anna Pavlovna, Willem III’s mother. Sophie and Willem were therefore cousins. The couple had three sons: Willem, Maurits and Alexander. Maurits died of meningitis at the age of six.
Willem and Sophie did not get along very well. They eventually separated, living in different palaces, though for outward appearances they remained husband and wife.
Sophie was intelligent and had a great interest in literature and philosophy. She corresponded frequently with friends and acquaintances abroad, including academics.
