Princess Beatrix, “the best looking one of the whole bunch” according to Andy Warhol, attended the opening of the exhibition Queens by Andy Warhol at Paleis Het Loo on October 10th.

Princess Beatrix attended the opening programme, then visited the exhibition and spoke with curator Hanna Klarenbeek about the creation of the exhibition.

The exhibition shows the complete ‘Royal Edition’ of Warhol’s iconic series Reigning Queens, which he made in 1985. The Royal Edition, which Paleis Het Loo bought in 1986, contains portraits that have been provided with a layer of glittering ‘diamond dust’. This unique series of sixteen silkscreen prints shows the only reigning queens at that time. Queen Beatrix, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Queen Ntombi Tfwala of Swaziland, the current kingdom of Eswatini, are on display.

Paleis Het Loo is the only museum in Europe that owns a complete set of this edition. The exhibition therefore offers a unique opportunity. Due to the fragility of the material, this is the last time that the series of portraits can be seen for the time being.

Learn about the queens and what they thought of the series.

Visit Queens by Andy Warhol from October 12, 2024 to January 1, 2025.
