Albertine Agnes
Albertine Agnes’ parents were Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik (Frederik Henry) and Amalia of Solms-Braunfels. They were keen for their daughter to make a good marriage, just as her brother and sisters had. But Albertine Agnes defied her mother’s wishes and married Willem Frederik (William Frederick), the stadtholder of Friesland. He was a grandson of William of Orange’s brother, making them second cousins. After her marriage, Albertine Agnes moved to Leeuwarden, to the court of the stadtholder of Friesland.
When her husband died Albertine Agnes became regent until her son Hendrik (Henry) Casimir II reached the age of majority. She divided her time between Leeuwarden and Dietz in Germany, of which her son was also prince.
