State of Wander
How do we look at historical buildings and palaces? And how does our gaze influence our surroundings and nature? State of Wander explores how heritage collections can contribute to contemporary discussions on environmental decline. Artists, designers and researchers were inspired from the artefacts and landscapes of Paleis Het Loo. Their work invites you to pause, to wander and to look again. The exhibition is about the potential of historical collections to contribute to the discourse on the climate crisis.
Developed through sustained research into the palace’s collection, architecture, gardens, and ecological histories, the exhibition brings together 10 new artworks installed throughout the palace interiors, stables, gardens, grotto, rooftop, and surrounding woodland.
State of Wander reflects a moment of movement and uncertainty. A time in which people, ideas, and ecosystems are searching for new directions and new ways to connect. This wandering is not a sign of being lost, but an invitation to pause, reflect, and chart a new course.

Historical ideas about nature continue to influence our thinking today. State of Wander brings past, present, and future together. The project explores the relationship between Paleis Het Loo and nature. By combining art and heritage, it creates an experience that stimulates, surprises, and invites reflection. It is not an ordinary exhibition, but a journey through time, space, and ideas.
