Music and theatre in the palace gardens
Just as in the 17th century, there is a rich programme of theatre and music in the gardens during the summer. The performances are included in the admission price. No separate ticket or booking is required. The performances start at 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm and tie in thematically with the exhibitions The Grand Staircase and State of Wander.
Note: all shows except Baroque Opera are in Dutch, but they're still great fun to watch, even if you don't speak the language.
Travel opera with Clara de Neushoorn
25 and 26 JulyWhen Clara the rhino was still a baby, she was captured by hunters. In the 18th century, she was brought to Europe by boat, where she never saw another rhino again. When she arrived, crowds of people came to see this animal from a world unknown to them. This children’s show tells her story through theatre and music.
BaroqueOpera Amsterdam: Mozart’s ‘The Abduction from the Seraglio’
8, 9, 15 and 16 AugustA romantic and comic opera about the love of Selim Pasha for his prisoner Konstanze. Selim has found true love in Konstanze and wants to marry her. Konstanze faces a dilemma, as she is already engaged... Osman, the guard of the harem, follows everything closely: a comic, sharp, and sensitive story. Mozart and his contemporaries were fascinated by the Ottoman Empire but had little knowledge of this culturally developed region. In collaboration with Dutch-Turkish composer and music theatre maker Selim Doğru, an encounter between Western and Eastern culture and eras emerges. Just like the meeting of Selim and Konstanze, transcending the boundaries of their own worlds.
